Meet the Expert:

Shawn Draper

Partner & Executive Vice President

What was your “finest moment?”
I’ve been lucky enough to hear several people I work with say, “This has been the best working experience of my career.” I cherish the moment each time I hear it. I’m inspired and fulfilled by helping people succeed and building lasting relationships. Of course, a hard fought “win” also feels pretty darn good.
What attracted you to IMRE?
I truly think it was serendipity. Dave IMRE and I had three mutual friends who recommended us to each other—separately, all on the same day. Their recommendations led to a terrific meeting the next week and the beginning of an outstanding work relationship the week thereafter.
What was a big influence in your career?
My experience as a small business owner shaped how I look at business, particularly when working with builders, remodelers and distributors. I’ve been in their shoes and know firsthand what’s needed to be successful day-to-day. My experience as a marketing manager at one of the leading brands in the home and building industry taught me the incredible science of strategic thinking, planning and execution.
What got you into this business?
Luck played a big role. I was a fresh-out-of-college newlywed with little career direction when I came upon a sales and marketing position with a manufacturer. I entered the field with the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a new grad and discovered I had a knack and a love for creating original ideas, presenting them in a persuasive way and satisfying clients.
What do you like most about working at IMRE?
The work. I love the home and building industry. I grew up in it. My grandfather owned and operated several lumberyards in southern Wisconsin, and he and my dad built spec homes when I was a kid. I also like the people I work with here. They are smart, hungry and committed to success.
Do you have a method for coming up with ideas and solutions for clients?
First, diligent fact-finding to discover that one special nugget that makes a difference, that helps us tell their story. Sometimes, the story comes alive while brainstorming with a group. Other times, it all comes together in the shower, on the treadmill or in the car.
If you had to live on a desert island, what would you miss most?
My wife and my two children. And Caffeine-Free Diet Coke.
What are your favorite and least favorite TV programs?
The writing in Boston Legal is smart and its delivery inspiring. I was a pre-law major when I started college, and the intellectual debate of practicing law fascinates me. On the flipside, each time I see even five minutes of Desperate Housewives I feel a little dumber.
What do you do for fun outside of work?
We love the beach—especially Wrightsville Beach in NC. There is nothing better than reading a good Patterson or Sanford novel in a beach chair along the shore. We also love the going to the movies, which we usually do every weekend.
