Meet the Expert:

Jay Selway

Art Director

What got you into this business?
I’ve always created art. As a child, it was mostly painting and drawing. And I’ve always loved computers, so I fell naturally into multimedia design.
What was a big influence in your career?
I worked for five years at The Baltimore Sun, which really prepared me for the future. Working at a daily newspaper toughens you up—the deadlines are crazy, the workload is crazier and the projects are intense.
What was your “finest moment?”
Convincing Fiberon, the composite decking and railing manufacturer, to put bird poop in their ad—and having it make sense.
What attracted you to IMRE?
The client roster is great, but I really admire how IMRE tackles agency integration. Unlike other agencies that struggle with how to work the interactive components into the creative process, IMRE only has one creative department. It makes for a more logical workflow and a better overall work experience.
What talent do you wish you had?
I wish I could sing. I’m an avid musician, DJ, composer and audio engineer—but I can’t sing a note.
Tell us about your pets.
I've owned many, but my dog Sawyer is definitely the best. My wife and I found him when we lived in the US Virgin Islands. Sawyer was lost on an island (St. Croix) and, coincidentally, we were watching “Lost” when he appeared on our doorstep.
What was growing up like for you?
Different would be a good word. My mother was a trauma nurse and my father an undercover narcotics officer. They worked some pretty crazy hours, but they instilled in me a sense of integrity and a strong work ethic.
What’s your favorite sports team?
I bleed Baltimore Ravens purple.
What do you do for fun outside of work?
I spend a lot of time writing music. I’m a published electronic musician, and DJs all over the world play my songs. Writing music requires such intense focus–it can be exhausting–but it can also be relaxing. When composing, you can’t think about work, money or any of the stress in your life.
